If you’ve ever purchased a bottle of whiskey, tequila, vodka, or rum, you’ve likely held a fifth without even realizing it. So, how many ounces are in a fifth? The simple answer is: a modern fifth contains 25.4 ounces of liquid. This measurement has become the standard reference for most liquor bottles you find on store shelves today.
The term itself has a fascinating origin tied to the old U.S. gallon system, which gives us insight into how alcohol packaging evolved over time. This shift from the imperial system to metric measurements didn’t happen overnight—it took decades of standardization and consumer familiarity.
That’s why the phrase “a fifth” persisted long after the exact measurement changed. But why this number? And how did we get here? Let’s break it down clearly, using both historical context and practical measurement guides to make sense of it all.
What Exactly Is a Fifth?
The term fifth originally came from the early American liquor industry, when spirits were packaged in bottles holding one-fifth of a U.S. gallon. Back then:
- Original fifth ≈ 25.6 fl oz (about 757 ml)
However, when the U.S. standardized liquor bottles to the metric system, the original fifth was replaced with:
- Modern fifth = 750 ml ≈ 25.4 ounces
So today, when someone refers to a fifth, they’re talking about a 750ml bottle, even though technically the original fifth was a little larger.
Quick Reference: Ounces and ML Comparison
To help visualize the difference, here’s a simple comparison:
| Bottle Size | Milliliters (ml) | Ounces (fl oz) | Common Name |
| Shot | 44 ml | 1.5 oz | Standard shot |
| Half pint | 200–250 ml | ~8–8.4 oz | Small flask size |
| Pint | 375 ml | 12.7 oz | Half-size bottle |
| Fifth | 750 ml | 25.4 oz | Standard liquor bottle |
| Liter | 1,000 ml | 33.8 oz | Larger than a fifth |
| Handle | 1,750 ml | 59.2 oz | Often has a carrying handle |
This table is especially helpful if you’re comparing sizes for events, parties, or drink planning.
How Many Shots Are in a Fifth?
A common practical question is: How many shots can you pour from a fifth?
- A standard shot = 1.5 ounces
- A fifth = 25.4 ounces
So:
25.4 ÷ 1.5 ≈ 16.9 shots
Meaning a fifth contains roughly:
- 17 shots of liquor
This is useful when planning for gatherings or portion control.
How Many Drinks Can You Make with a Fifth?
The number of cocktails depends on the recipe. Here are some examples:
- A gin & tonic using 2 oz of gin = about 12 drinks
- A whiskey sour using 2 oz whiskey = about 12 drinks
- A basic mixed drink using 1.5 oz = about 17 drinks
If you’re mixing cocktails with larger pours, expect fewer total drinks.
Why Do We Still Say “A Fifth”?
Even though the modern bottle is 750 ml (not technically a fifth anymore), the old term stuck around because:
- It was widely used for decades
- It became a cultural reference
- It rolls off the tongue more easily than “seven-hundred-fifty-milliliter bottle”
So today, when someone says:
“I bought a fifth of tequila,”
They mean a standard 750ml bottle.
Understanding Ounces vs. Milliliters
If you’re ever confused about conversions:
- 1 ounce = 29.57 ml
- 750 ml = 25.36 ounces
This helps when converting recipes, labeling bottles, or comparing international products.
Related Bottle Sizes Explained
Since many people compare a fifth to other bottles, here’s a helpful breakdown:
Pint vs. Fifth
- A pint (375 ml) = half of a fifth
So two pints are equivalent to one fifth.
Fifth vs. Liter
- A liter (1000 ml) = 33.8 oz
That’s about 8 ounces more than a fifth.
Fifth vs. Handle
- A handle (1.75L) = 59.2 oz
That’s more than double a fifth.
Knowing this makes it easier when deciding how much alcohol to buy for different occasions.
Practical Usage: Bars, Homes, and Events
A fifth is the most commonly sold spirit bottle in retail stores because:
- It’s a manageable size
- It’s economical
- It’s ideal for home bars
- It’s easy to carry and store
For parties:
- One fifth serves about 6–10 people casually
- Or 3–4 people for a heavy-pour social night
