There is a coolant by the name of Freon that is used in many different devices today. It is also called R22, a hydrochlorofluorocarbon that is not going to be used anymore after 2020. What Is Freon?
Freon is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon. This is a substance that is chemically produced. It is, in some cases, and ozone-depleting substance. These are going to be regulated. There are two different classes of them. Those that are in Class I or the most damaging, almost all of which have already been phased out. Class II hydrochlorofluorocarbons are also being phased out. One of those is called R-22. It is sold as Freon, and it is found in refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and many other products. Fortunately, due to a law that was passed, it will be completely phased out by the year 2020.
How Is It Able To Affect The Ozone Layer?
It is able to adversely affect the ozone layer because of a chemical change. Ozone is actually just like oxygen, but it has an extra oxygen element. When hydrochlorofluorocarbons come into contact with ozone, this causes it to lose that extra oxygen part. That causes the ozone to be destroyed, and that is exactly why these were phased out.
Are There Replacements For Hydrochlorofluorocarbons?
Once the Clean Air Act of 1990 was passed, scientists got to work. They develop different types of refrigerants including 410A. Several others were made as the years passed by. R-134A was one of them. This is a haloalkane refrigerant, one that has very good thermodynamic properties, and is one of the best alternatives to Freon available today. The EPA has cleared it, and it’s easy to retrofit this into any existing freezer or air conditioner. It has a rating which says that it’s ozone depletion potential is actually nonexistent. Another good one is called R-407C. It mixes many different hydrofluorocarbons together. These are also very good, when combined, at providing refrigeration. There are several others that can be used including R-404A. What If It Is Not Completely Phased Out?
From a completely legal perspective, it is going to be phased out. By 2020, it’s not going to be produced anymore. However, this does not mean that every product that has been made, of which there are millions of them, is going to instantly have the Freon removed from it. In fact, you are not legally allowed to remove the Freon on your own. If you do, there is the probability that it would simply go up into the atmosphere. That is the last thing that the scientists want to have happen, as well as those that are trying to monitor the ozone layer. Is This Really Going To Help The Environment?
One question that is also asked quite a bit is if there is any way to prove that this is going to help the environment at all. Looking at the scientific studies, the ozone hole which was extremely large was primarily centered over Antarctica. There were small portions of South America and South Africa that may have been affected, but if it was, it was minimal. There was also not a lot of proof that the ozone layer was depleting in vast quantities anywhere else, and there are occasional holes in the ozone layer from time to time.
